Blackjack: The Basic Rules
Some of you might already know that Blackjack is also known as 21, but became known as Blackjack as the Americans applied additional winnings for certain hands, such as having an Ace of spades and a Black Jack. If the dealer must hit, if means any value of 17 and below will force the dealer to draw another card. This puts the dealer at high risk of exceeding 21, which results in an automatic win for all the players who have not exceeded the amount as well.
The basic game offers the player 4 options in each round. However, not all of these options can be used with each round as some options such as split can only be used when you are given 2 identical cards in the first round.
- Hit – The dealer adds another card to your hand to increase the value.
- Double Down – The dealer provides 1 more card to your hand after you have doubled the bet value. (no additional moves are granted after selecting double down)
- Split – Split 2 of the same cards into 2 hands, which requires a bet equal to the first bet placed. The dealer will add another card to each hand, and players will have the options from above on each individual hand)
- Some casinos will not allow certain actions to take place, which is why it is important for players to read the game rules before placing a bet. For example, some casinos do not allow the player to double down after splitting, or only certain cards can be used to double down.
- To split, the cards need to hold the exact same value but can be of different suits.
- Insurance is an additional feature offered when the dealer has an Ace or face card. The dealer will offer all players insurance, which is an option side bet. Should you place this bet and the dealer has Blackjack, you will win on the side bet, but lose your table bet. If the dealer does not have insurance, you will lose the side bet, but still, play the game as per usual.
How the Game is Played
Blackjack casinos all provide the same regular layout that includes 1 to 5 positions and the basic game rules in the center of the table.
To be included in the next round, you need to place a bet in front of your seat on the table. The dealer will give each player 2 face-up cards and start from his left and provide the applicable options such as Hit, Stand, Split, or Double Down.
